TAXATION

( Modern version, to be sung by cast – and even audience – as the curtain call of the show – Robin Hood Strikes Back.  Who wouldn’t love to sing about their income tax?  With words printed in the programmes they’ll be able to. )


1.

Your head it is turning, your pockets are burning

And still you can get no relief 

The day’s drawing near and the message is clear

That it’s time to be paying the chief

-  of  Taxation,    Taxation!

You’d think it’s the way to damnation

But what would become of the nation

If people weren’t paying their tax


2.

You’re paying for things when the register rings

And you don’t even know they exist

There’s taxes on leisure and working and pleasure

And punishment if you resist

-	the Taxation  - Taxation!

They’re setting the laws of the nation

And till you get sent for cremation

They’re bound to be raising the tax

You might think it’s rash when they’re spending your cash

 On the projects that get out of hand

Or you give it to bigots who’ll spend it on frigates

Supposed to be saving the land

-	from Taxation  -  Taxation!

You don’t need to fear an invasion

When men can be kept in their station

As long as they’re paying their tax

The buzzards will call when you’re ready to fall

And you’re born with a price on your head

They’ll hover around when you’re there on the ground

And they’ll tax you right after you’re dead!

They’re feeling a sense of elation

But they’ve sparing the life of the nation

As long as it’s paying its tax

So give me a chance and I’m gone in a glance

To a place where I know I’ll be free

Without any rent on the roof of my tent

And there’s nobody pestering me

The bush is your only salvation

No rates and no cash or inflation

And nobody taking the tax

Just give us a standing ovation

For saving the life of the nation – as long as we’re paying our tax
